Internet users can still look for bubbles in the Milky Way

Internet users, also those from Poland, participating in The Milky Way Project, can search for characteristic bubbles, in which new stars are born. Analysing the images taken by the Spitzer Space Telescope will help astronomers in the classification and measurement of the Milky Way.

Social media science project - The Milky Way Project - is carried out on the Zooniverse platform.

Some bubbles have already been found in the first part of the project. It was so successful that researchers have expanded the search to new regions of the Milky Way. In addition to the bubbles and star clusters, other objects are also hidden in the pictures, such as extensive green objects (called EGO) and never-before-seen galaxies that lie beyond the Milky Way, obscured by stars and dust.

"If you see anything unusual in the images, be sure to mark it and venture a guess what it might be. We hope to map these objects, and then use your discoveries for future observations. You might even find something we do not expect, something really unusual" - encourage the project authors.

Internet user who wants to help researchers can begin to look for the characteristic bubbles and other objects in the pictures available on the project website, marking them accordingly. "This type of task, recognizing shapes, is something that people do very well, so trust your first impression with each picture. The same image will be shown to several people, so do not worry about making simple mistakes" - note the project authors. Beginners can use the tutorial that explains how to make the classification.

Classifications made by Internet users will be stored, and the Milky Way Project team will carefully analyse the results and make sure that the materials are useful for researchers.
