Five one-year scholarships - two for doctoral students and three for postdoctoral students - are the prizes in this year\'s edition of the competition "For Women in Science" organised by L\'Oréal Polska in collaboration with Polish Committee for UNESCO and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

The amount of scholarships in this year\'s edition is: PLN 27000 (in the case of doctoral scholarships) and PLN 32000 (for postdoctoral fellowships). In addition, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education will grant an additional award to each laureate - reimbursement of the cost of travel to a foreign scientific conference of choice in Europe. Entries in the competition for women researchers doing research in the life sciences can be submitted from 2 April to 31 May.

The condition for participating in the competition, for both doctoral students (age limit - 35 years) and postdoctoral students (age limit - 45 years), is the final stage of the work, and its continuation in the year of collection of scholarships. Nominations are evaluated by 16 judges - eminent scholars and representatives of Polish science.

For the first time this year, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education is an official partner of the competition. "In the National Science Centre competitions settled in 2012, women won 42 percent of all grants. Especially young researchers did very well - emphasized Minister of Science Prof. Lena Kolarska-Bobińska. - I am glad that the Ministry of Science, together with L\' Oréal for the first time in the new formula, supports the career development of young, talented and ambitious women engaged in research" - said the Minister.

Polish subsidiary of L\'Oréal has been granting its fellowships for young women scientists for fourteen years. The aim of the program is to promote women and their professional achievements, and to popularise science among the general public. Every year, the program selects young talented women, whose example encourages others to start scientific careers. Fellows conduct advanced research in the fields including medicine, biotechnology, biology. On the list of winners there already are 65 women from various academic centres in Poland.

Details of the competition are available at www.lorealdlakobietinauki.pl.

The competition "For Women in Science" is a local Polish initiative. The source of inspiration was the agreement signed in Paris between the Group L\'Oréal and UNESCO "For Women in Science". Every year at the Paris headquarters of UNESCO, outstanding women - representatives of the world of science and young PhD students from the five continents - receive cash prizes and scholarships. Over the 16 years of the program, prizes amounting to 100 thousand dollars have been awarded to 82 outstanding researchers, and international scholarships to nearly 2 thousand young women from 115 countries.
