Ministry of Science and Higher Education: the potential of research units evaluated

For the first time under the new rules, scientists evaluated the potential of research units and selected 37 most prestigious units that obtained the "A+" category, reported the Ministry of Science in a press release.

Research Units Evaluation Committee chaired by Prof. Maciej Zabel analysed and compared the scientific achievements of departments, research and scientific institutes. More than 960 units have been given A+, A, B and C categories. It is a measure of their research success, but also an important indicator affecting the amount of subsidies granted from the budget.

"It is vital that that renowned scholars with high academic achievements undertook to assess the potential of all institutions" - emphasized Minister of Science and Higher Education Prof. Barbara Kudrycka. - "They gave a clear signal that the highest standard quality of research deserves higher funding and the scientific community can not consent to subsidizing mediocrity from public funds. This philosophy of science financing motivates to achieve better results."

Research units were compared in four groups: humanities and social sciences, life sciences , science and engineering, the science of art and artistic creation. The committee evaluated scientific and creative achievements, potential, tangible results and the most important results of scientific activity indicated by the unit - according to the release.

For the first time, 37 best units have been awarded the "A+" category. "Research units with the prestigious "A+" category, together with the the National Leading Research Centres, are the elite of Polish science" - emphasised Prof. Kudrycka.

Prof. Maciej Zabel added: " The higher the category, the greater the subsidy for statutory research and opportunities to apply for EU funds. "A +" category was awarded to the scientific elite, and the "C" category is a strong warning that forces stepping up research and restructuring. This approach is particularly important in times of heavy international competition and difficult budgetary situation".
