Polish physicist awarded a prestigious ERC grant

Prof. Maciej Lewenstein Polish physicist working at the Spanish Institute of Photonics (ICFO) in Castelldefels, received the prestigious "Advanced Grant" awarded by the European Research Council (ERC). This is his second triumph in the competition.

The European Research Council (ERC) awarded 284 researchers in the sixth edition of the "Advanced Grants" competition for experienced researchers. Each winner received about 3.5 million euros for their work. In total, all scholars received 660 million euros.

"Prof. Lewenstein received his first +Advanced Grant+ from the ERC in 2008" - reports the website of the Institute of Photonics in Castelldefels, Spain. The scientists conducts research recognized by the ERC at this institution.

Maciej Lewenstein was born in 1955 in Warsaw. Since 2005 he has worked in Spain, at the Institute of Photonics in Castelldefels and Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies in Barcelona. He made an outstanding contribution to the development of quantum optics and physics of ultracold gases.

"His theoretical works often concern ground-breaking experiments, such as the first observation of dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates. His research on strongly correlated ultracold quantum gases has led to the experimental implementation of the so-called quantum simulators, i.e., the first quantum computers for special applications" - reads the website of the Foundation for Polish Science.

Quantum simulators allow to understand the complex physics of quantum many-body systems and phenomena such as superfluidity and superconductivity. Professor Lewenstein’s research also concerns matter wave interferometry and its potential applications for precise time and frequency measurements.

In 2011, Prof. Lewenstein received the Foundation for Polish Science Award (so-called Polish Nobel) for achievements in the field of quantum optics and physics of ultracold gases. He is also the winner of the Humboldt Research Award and the Hamburg Prize awarded by the Joachim Herz Stiftung.

According to the Foundation for Polish Science, Maciej Lewenstein studied at the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw, where he received a master\'s degree in 1978. In the years 1980-1995 he worked at the Center for Theoretical Physics PAS. He earned his PhD at the University of Essen (1983) and wrote his habilitation thesis at the Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (1986). Since 1993 he is a professor.

He conducted research in many research centres around the world, including Harvard University , the Universities of Essen and Hanover, the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (JILA), the University of Colorado Boulder and the French Centre for Nuclear Research (CEA) in Saclay. He coordinated several research projects and authored about 400 publications.

EU\'s European Research Council, founded in 2007, is the pan-European body dedicated to stimulate, support and fund research in Europe. ERC grants are awarded to leading researchers of all nationalities living in the European Research Area, and those declaring willingness to relocate to the area. It covers the EU Member States and associated countries under the EU programs in the field of scientific research.
