Polish scientists involved in the work on the new accelerator at CERN

Polish scientists join the work on the new accelerator to be built at CERN. Director of the National Centre for Nuclear Research, Prof. Grzegorz Wrochna signed agreement on the CLIC project at CERN near Geneva.

CLIC (Compact Linear Collider), unlike the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), will be a linear accelerator. The particles will be accelerated not in a circle, but in a straight line. Its development is not certain yet, put physicists have already started studying the technology, in which it could be built.

Prof. Wrochna reminded that for now the Large Hadron Collider was closed with preparations underway to set off the accelerator with more energy. The researchers, however, have decided to try to create new particle acceleration technology. "The history of accelerators shows that rather than building larger and more expensive machines can, each new accelerator contains a new idea, new technology" - explained director of the National Centre for Nuclear Research. He revealed that the CLIC accelerator would use a particle beam to accelerate another particle beam.

"In CLIC we want to produce a beam of particles with a relatively large intensity and relatively low energy - and this is easy to do - and then transform this energy into a smaller number of particles, giving them a greater energy. The idea sounds simple, but to make it happen, we need to perform a large number of calculations, designs, prototypes, tests. The National Centre for Nuclear Research joins this work. This is the subject matter of today\'s agreement" - said Wrochna .

The CERN Council President Prof. Agnieszka Zalewska speaks enthusiastically of the signed agreement: "The signing of this agreement means the development of future technologies in Poland. It is extremely important that we develop technologies of the future, in order to make up for the lost years" - said Zalewska .

The signing ceremony was attended by the Minister of Science and Higher Education, Prof. Barbara Kudrycka, who visited CERN and met with Polish scientists. The Minister pointed out that Polish researchers were highly valued by the CERN and by their superiors. "That\'s why I go back to Poland with great satisfaction. Arguments from CERN will help me fight for increased budget for science at the informal meeting of the Council of Ministers. We are in an extremely difficult situation, but it is one of the most valid arguments" - said Prof. Kudrycka during a meeting with scientists.
