Scientists have developed a device which can be used by two patients with just one ventilator.

Project leader Professor Marek Darowski from the Nalecz Institute of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering PAS said the invention called Ventil was born from necessity as during the coronavirus pandemic there is global shortage of ventilators.

Minister of Science Jarosław Gowin said in a video posted on the Ministry’s social media page: “The Łukasiewicz Research Network and the Nalecz Institute of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering PAS are working on a device enabling ventilation of two patients using a single ventilator. This will optimise the use of medical equipment in the treatment of coronavirus. The Ministry of Science has allocated PLN 5 million to this globally unique project'.

Professor Adam Liebert, head of the Nalecz Institute of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering PAS said: “It would be good if every clinic had such a device for each ventilator, so that in a situation of dramatic choice doctors have the opportunity to start the process of mechanical ventilation of two patients instead of one.”
