An automatic and remote driver behaviour monitoring system which can profile drivers and send data to car insurance providers is being developed by the Kielce University of Technology.

Costing PLN 4.3 million, the project called Usage Based Insurance is an individual car insurance, in which the premium is calculated by analysing a driver`s driving style and road behaviour.

According to Project leader Professor Tomasz Lech Stańczyk there is a trend to more closely correlate car insurance with the way cars are used by drivers.

This applies especially to car fleets in large enterprises.

He said: ”So far, we have had discounts for damage-free driving. But today`s development of telematics, saturation of cars with IT, control systems, helps to extract much more information about the way the car is used.”

He added: ”A company owner who can show that he has good drivers who drive safely, can negotiate the premium with the insurance provider. The system should be autonomous, automatic and remote via GPS and telematics.”

Director of ŁUKASIEWICZ-PIMOT Professor Witold Luty, one of the companies involved in the project, said: "It focuses on shaping safe behaviour of drivers through a motivation system.”

Globtrak CEO Rafał Chaba which is also involved said that in the project, the company will be responsible for the implementation of research results into technology and for testing developed standards in vehicle fleets.

The value of the project "Innovative system supporting the motor insurance risk assessment for UBI (Usage Based Insurance)" exceeds PLN 4.3 million, and EU funding of over PLN 3.8 million comes from the Intelligent Development Operational Program for 2014-2020, distributed by the National Centre for Research and Development. Own contribution is provided by the private company in the consortium. The project is scheduled for two years.

On Tuesday, a cooperation agreement was signed in Kielce between representatives of the consortium implementing the project: Kielce University of Technology (PŚk), Łukasiewicz Research Network - Automotive Industry Institute (ŁUKASIEWICZ-PIMOT) and Globtrak Polska.
