More international students in Lublin

In the current academic year, a total of over three thousand foreigners study at universities in Lublin, 30 percent more than in the previous academic year. More than half came from the Ukraine, other large groups are students from Taiwan and the U.S.

"The number of international students in Lublin exceeds three thousand and this is the third highest result in Poland (after Warsaw and Kraków)" - head of the department of strategy and investor service of the City of Lublin, Mariusz Sagan said at a press conference.

He added that the rate of internationalisation, i.e. the proportion of foreigners among students in Lublin, is 4 percent. This is well above the Polish average, which is below 2 percent.

The number of international students in Lublin has been growing steadily in recent years. In the academic year 2010/11, there were 1.4 thousand, in 2011/12 - more than 1.7 thousand, and in 2012/13 - nearly 2.4 thousand. Currently, nine public and private universities in Lublin educate 3037 foreigners.

One-third of foreigners - 1081 - are students of the Medical University, which for many years has been offering English-language studies for future doctors and dentists.

More than 630 people from abroad study at various faculties at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, 380 at the Catholic University of Lublin. 370 foreign students are at the private University of Vincent Pol in Lublin, which offers studies in English in the fields of physiotherapy, and tourism and recreation.

The largest group of foreign students in Lublin (1,537 persons, 50.5 percent) are Ukrainians. 282 persons (9.3 percent) are Taiwanese, and 271 people came to study in Lublin from the United States. Nearly 6 percent international students are Norwegians, 4.7 percent - Belarusians, and 4.5 percent - citizens of Saudi Arabia. There are also students from Canada, Sweden, Slovakia, Spain, Czech Republic.

Sagan stressed that the presence of foreign students bring many economic, cultural and social benefits to the city and its residents. He explained that an increase in the number of international students raises the demand not only for educational services, but also in food industry and rent or purchase of apartments.

"International students actively participate in the life of the city. They are not only consumers in the economic sense. Our research has shown that they are more likely to become involved in cultural life , entertainment , society, sports than Polish students. They bring their positive experience from home countries and in this sense have an impact on the modernization of the city" - said Sagan.

Since 2011, the city has been carrying out the project "Study in Lublin", supporting Lublin universities in attracting students from abroad. Part of this project is an information website, which publishes in several languages information on educational offer, scholarship programs, advice on the necessary formalities and organizing stay in Lublin. In addition, Lublin educational offer is presented at various meetings with young people in Poland and abroad, in consulates, schools of the Polish community abroad, and at education fairs.

Sagan announced that the program would be continued and its reach expanded to other countries across the eastern Polish border. "Our goal is that the number of international students Lublin grows to five thousand by 2020" - he added.
