Researchers from all around the world are invited to apply for the Ulam Programme. It will help them fund a medium-length stay in Poland, during which they will be able to conduct research at a Polish university. Application deadline is 23 April.

Helping foreign researchers to develop their career by intensifying international mobility and enabling them to establish scientific cooperation with excellent host institutions in Poland - is the main objective of the Ulam Programme, announced by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA).

Scholarships offered in the programme will allow both recognised and promising researchers representing all fields of science to visit Poland in order to participate in the scientific activities of their host institution: primarily research projects and teaching. "The programme will facilitate a gradual increase in the number of foreign scientists involved in scientific research and teaching in Poland and also enable or deepen international contacts with foreign institutions" - explains NAWA in the official call for proposals.

The programme also provides an interesting opportunity for the Polish higher education institutions: they will be able to invite specialists from their priority areas who will be able to make a significant contribution to their research and support the institution in applying for prestigious grants.

The beneficiaries of the Ulam scholarship will be able to conduct research and/or development work, enter a post-doctoral training, obtain materials for their research and teaching at the host institution.

Visits within the programme can last from 6 to 24 months. The beneficiary will receive a monthly scholarship (10,000 PLN) for the duration of their stay, as well as a mobility allowance, which will allow them to cover the travel costs.

The programme is open to researchers representing all scientific fields. An application must be submitted by an individual scientist who holds a doctoral degree awarded in a country other than Poland, does not hold Polish citizenship and has not lived, worked or studied in Poland since at least 2017.

Application deadline is 23 April 2019, 3:00 PM Central European Time (UTC +01:00). Detailed information about the programme, as well as documents in English are available at the NAWA website: https://nawa.gov.pl/en/scientists/the-ulam-programme.

Patron of the programme, Stanisław Marcin Ulam (1909 -1984) was a brilliant Polish mathematician, a member of the internationally renowned Lviv School of Mathematics and co-author of the Scottish Book. He earned a PhD from the Polytechnic National University in Lviv in 1933. Just before the the Second World Wa, he went to the USA to join the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Several American universities appointed him as an associate professor (e.g. University of Wisconsin, University of Colorado, University of Florida).
