PKN Orlen in cooperation with the Industrial Chemistry Research Institute carried out an attempt to process crude oil fraction with vegetable oils. The aim of the project is to develop innovative technology and obtain high quality biofuels as a component of diesel oil, the company informs.

PKN Orlen explains that the test was carried out in one of the refinery installations that "are an important part of the production of diesel oils". "PKN Orlen in cooperation with the Industrial Chemistry Research Institute successfully carried out a full-scale trial of simultaneous processing - co-hydrogenation - of crude oil fraction and vegetable oils" - the company from Płock reports.

"The results and conclusions are very promising, which allows us to optimistically assess the likelihood of implementing this technology in our production plants in the near future. Of course, we still have to work on eliminating restrictions and continue to adjust production conditions, but these are natural, if time-consuming, stages of development of new technologies" - says the PKN Orlen Management Board member responsible for development, Zbigniew Leszczyński, quoted in the company`s release.

According to Leszczyński, "effective cooperation of Polish science and business takes real, not only laboratory shapes, and successfully progresses towards building innovative Polish industry".

According to PKN Orlen, the test was carried out as part of implementation of research and development project, which in 2017 received funding from the sector-specific program INNOCHEM of the National Centre for Research and Development. "The main objective of the project is to develop our own innovative technology for simultaneous processing of crude oil and vegetable oils or animal fats. The intended result is obtaining high quality biofuels that would become a component of diesel oil" - emphasise the representatives of the company from Płock.

PKN Orlen points out that the product of the tested process can significantly support the implementation of the National Index Target - the obligation to ensure a minimum share of biocomponents and other renewable fuels in the total amount of liquid fuels and biofuels consumed in transport.

PKN Orlen reminds that "due to the quality and operational requirements, currently the basic method of introducing biocomponents to the market is alcohol dosing in the case of gasolines and fatty acid esters dosing in the case of diesel fuel in storage facilities and terminals".

PKN Orlen explains that the test was preceded by multi-stage micro-scale and large-scale laboratory research carried out by the Industrial Chemistry Research Institute. "The test prepared by the Development and Technology Area of PKN Orlen and the Industrial Chemistry Research Institute was designed to allow full control of the process and enable the collection of the largest possible amount of process data for the subsequent possible implementation of the new technology" - the company adds.

According to PKN Orlen, "a significant advantage of the new technology is the possibility of using existing refinery installations, which significantly reduces the necessary investment expenditures." (PAP)
