International experts will discuss perinatal depression and emotional consequences of complications in the perinatal period during the 38th conference of the Society for Reproductive and Infant Psychology (SRIP), which will take place in September at the University of Lodz.

On 11-12 September, Łódź will welcome psychologists and representatives of social and medical sciences from a dozen countries including the UK, the Netherlands, Israel, Portugal, Turkey, Russia, Ireland, Croatia, China, Italy and Switzerland. Poland will be represented by researchers from the University of Lodz, University of Gdansk, Kazimierz Wielki University and Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University, told PAP Prof. Eleonora Bielawska-Batorowicz from the Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Lodz, member of the SRIP Board.

The Society for Reproductive and Infant Psychology, based in the United Kingdom, brings together representatives of various scientific disciplines who conduct research on reproduction and reproductive health, as well as development of infants and toddlers. The society is international; a significant number of its members are psychologists, but SRIP is open to representatives of other social and medical sciences.

SRIP traditionally organises annual scientific conferences not only in various academic centres in the UK, but also in other countries. "Participants present latest research results concerning, among other things, psychological aspects of pregnancy and childbirth, fertility problems, pregnancy and delivery complications, emotional reactions during pregnancy and after childbirth, their importance for adjusting to the role of parent and relationship with the child, as well as the results of research on the functioning of medical personnel" - added Prof. Bielawska-Batorowicz.

Previous SRIP conferences were held in Dublin, Amsterdam, and Leuven, and the organization of this year`s event was entrusted to the Institute of Psychology of the University of Lodz, as a result of several years of efforts of Prof. Bielawska-Batorowicz.

The program of this year`s conference will include plenary lectures, symposia and thematic sessions as well as poster sessions.

"During the two-day conference, participants will have the opportunity to participate in sessions on pre- and post-natal depression, emotional effects of perinatal complications, assisted procreation, determinants of parental attitudes, traumatic experiences related to childbirth, feeding methods. Poster sessions will concern similar problems "- added Prof. Bielawska-Batorowicz.

Outstanding researchers are invited every year to deliver keynote speeches. This year`s keynote speaker will be Dr. Grażyna Kmita from the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Warsaw, an expert in the problems of premature birth and mental development of prematurely born children.

The second speaker will be Prof. Jane Sandall from the Department of Women and Children`s Health, Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine, King`s College London, who was awarded the SRIP Lecturer Award in 2018.

Every year, the SRIP Board awards prizes for the best master`s theses and doctoral dissertations, the subject matter of which is consistent with the profile of the society. The prize winners present their projects during special SRIP Prizes sessions. In 2018, the prize for the best doctoral dissertation went to Nicola Carone from the Sapienza University in Rome, and the prize for the best master`s thesis to Vania Sandoz from the University Hospital in Lausanne. Prizes for the best poster presentations are also awarded during the conference.
