Wrocław University of Science and Technology students took third place overall in the Formula Student Italy 2018. The team from the Białystok University of Technology was sixth.

Student teams from all over the world compete in the Formula Student series. Their task is to design and build race cars. Then they must achieve the best possible results on the racetrack and present the business concept of their vehicles.

The competition in Varano, Italy took place on 11-15 July; 47 teams competed for the victory at Autodromo Riccardo Paletti. The title defenders were students from Wrocław University of Science and Technology, whose car RT08 won last year with the advantage of more than forty points over the second in the table, the team from the Polytechnic University of Milan. This year, they competed with the RT09 car, a development of the previous model.

Ultimately, the PWR Racing Team scored 805.16 points and took third place in the general classification of vehicles with an internal combustion engine. In second place was the team from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (819.414 points), and the Austrian team from Graz University of Technology won with 908.070 points.

The team Cerber Motosport, representing the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Białystok University of Technology, was also successful. Their car CMS-05 scored a total of 656,410 points and took sixth place overall.

Formula Student begins with the static competition. This includes business presentation, presenting of the car construction costs and the Design Event, technical presentation of the car.

Then comes the time to compete on the racetrack - the dynamic competitions. The cars start in several competitions: Acceleration (75 meters acceleration test), Skidpad (figure 8 track-time), Autocross (single lap time test), Endurance (the main race) and Efficiency (vehicle performance evaluation).

In addition to students from Wrocław and Białystok, Poland was also represented by teams from Gdańsk University of Technology (35th place overall), Rzeszów University of Technology and the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków (equal 47th place).
