Spiders are invertebrates that always evoke emotions - from fascination to fear and terror. The latest results of Polish arachnology research will be presented at the 5th National Arachnological Conference in Siedlce in September.

Spiders are one of the most important groups of predators not only among terrestrial invertebrates, but among animals in general. There are over 40,000 spider species in the world, more than 800 in Poland.

"It is estimated that the total weight of their victims from one year matches the weight of meat and fish consumed during the same time by people all over the world" - says Dr. Radomir Jaskuła from the Biodiversitatis Foundation, co-organizer of the conference.

The program of this year`s edition of the event includes both popular science lectures (open to a wider audience interested in spiders, their biology, ecology and diversity), as well as a typically scientific part, during which Polish arachnologists will present their latest research results. Young scientists will receive attractive prizes for the best presentation of the results of their research.

There will also be lectures of guests from outside the arachnological community. This year`s guests will be Prof. Mirosława Dabert from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and Prof. Cezary Tkaczuk from Siedlce University of Natural Sciences and Humanities.

An additional attraction of this year`s conference will be open workshops devoted to the methodology of catching spiders in the field and identifying domestic species of these invertebrates.

"The workshops will be hosted by outstanding Polish specialists. Students and PhD students are especially welcome, an incentive for them can be free participation in both the conference and the workshops. The workshops are also open to amateurs who want to learn more about this group of arachnids "- adds Dr. Jaskuła.

Applications for the conference, including the willingness to present papers, should be sent to: marek.zabka@uph.edu.pl. Those willing to take part in arachnological workshops should additionally send their applications to: biodiversitatis@gmail.com (the number of places is limited). The application form can be found at www.arachnologia.edu.pl.

The conference in Siedlce will take place on September 14-15. It will be the fifth national arachnology conference. Previous editions took place in Gugny (2012), Siedlce (2014), Łódź and Spała (2015) and Katowice (2016).

The organizers of the event are the University of Natural Sciences and Humanities in Siedlce, the Arachnological Section of the Polish Zoological Society and the Biodiversitatis Foundation. The monthly "Dzikie Życie" is a partner.
