65 teams from 20 countries around the world have signed up for the fourth edition of the international competition of Mars rovers - the European Rover Challenge. The competition will take place in September in Starachowice (Świętokrzyskie).

The European Rover Challenge (ERC) is one of the world`s largest international robotics and space competitions, in which the constructors of Mars rovers compete with each other. The fourth edition of the event will take place between on 14-16 September 2018 at the Museum of Nature and Technology in Starachowice (Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship). The event has been given an honorary patronage of the European Space Agency.

A record number of 65 teams have signed up for the fourth edition of the competition, the organizers of the event inform in a press release. 60 teams competed in the previous edition, which took place in 2016. Competition documentation for this year`s edition has been sent by teams from 20 countries, including from Germany, the UK, India, Italy, Canada, the United States, Poland, Norway and Mexico.

The ERC is traditionally attended by students from the world`s best technical universities. Polish Teams from universities in Białystok, Bydgoszcz, Chełm, Kielce, Częstochowa, Gliwice, Kraków, Łódź, Opole, Rzeszów, Szczecin, Toruń, Warsaw and Wrocław have signed up for the competition.

"European Rover Challenge is unique opportunity for the teams to present their members` capabilities and an important step in building their career in the space industry. That is why we are very happy so see representatives of as many as 20 countries, presenting different approaches to space robotics" - says the event organizer Łukasz Wilczyński, quoted in the press release. "The competition will get even more exciting with stronger representation of European teams, which account for nearly half of all registered teams".

The novelty in this year`s edition of the ERC competition is the PRO formula, in which teams that deal with robotics and space technologies professionally can present their capabilities.

The ERC is very popular with the public. The organisers are preparing an educational zone of science and technology demonstrations for the spectators. More than 70,000 spectators and over 700 constructors from around the world participated in previous editions of the event.

The ERC is the European counterpart of the University Rover Challenge held in the United States. The first edition of the ERC was organized in 2014 at the Regional Science and Technology Center in Podzamcze near Kielce.

The ERC is organized by the European Space Foundation, and co-organized by the Special Economic Zone "Starachowice" SA, Starachowice Poviat, the Museum of Nature and Technology in Starachowice and Mars Society Polska. The competition has been given an honorary patronage of the European Space Agency, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the Ministry of Digital Affairs, the National Centre for Research and Development and the Polish Space Agency.
